WISDOM IN LISTENING

“The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.” (Proverbs 20:5)

“He who answers before listening—that is his folly and his shame.” (Proverbs 18:13)

Talmud

“The wise man . . . does not break in upon the speech of his fellow; he is not hasty to answer; he questions according to the subject matter, and answers to the point . . . ; regarding that which he has not understood he says, I do not understand it; and he acknowledges the truth.” (Pirke Avot 5:10)
